RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several entry passages down to the facility... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of British forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over the holidays. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
