The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent honors show approaches, there’s always an outcry for the addition fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, however the design behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
